SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Learn With UMC: Data Collection Tools
DESCRIPTION:Funders often ask nonprofits to demonstrate their impact through internal data. Nonprofits trying to meet this expectation sometimes collect disorganized\, unwieldy information that is expensive and difficult to use. In the best cases\, well-conducted and managed data can radically improve program results and improve funding prospects. \nYour own program research can return robust information to inform and improve your program’s impact\, but lean organizations know it is critical to make research efforts count. In this workshop you will learn how to design simple and effective interviews\, focus groups\, and surveys that get the information you need. \nJoin us at United Farmer’s Market in Belfast from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursday\, April 16 to learn how to design simple\, low-cost data collection methods with the Data Innovation Project. There is no cost to participate\, but space is limited so pre-registration is required. \n***CANCELLATION/NO SHOW POLICY \nPlease note that while this event is free\, the experience is valuable and wait-lists are long. We require cancellation at least 48 hours in advance to fill your seat from the wait-list. If you are unable to attend at late notice\, please arrange for a substitute to attend in your place. If you cancel without a substitute within 48 hours or otherwise don’t show\, you will be charged a fee of $50.00. \nAbout the presenters: \nThe Data Innovation Project was founded with support from the Maine Economic Improvement Fund and is housed within the Cutler Institute for Health and Social Policy at the Muskie School of Public Service\, University of Southern Maine. The Data Innovation Project improves Maine’s capacity for data-informed decision making by providing access to affordable information and instruction\, skilled technical assistance\, and open access to a growing body of resourcesFill out my LGL form!

Refreshments will be provided. \nKelly Carey is program coordinator at United Midcoast Charities. She is the primary contact for questions about the 2020 grant cycle and may be reached at kelly@unitedmidcoastcharities.org. \nFill out my LGL form!

SUMMARY:Grantseeking with FDO Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn with UMC: Grantseeking with Foundation Directory Online (FDO) workshop will be offered at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday\, Feb 11 at Social Capital\, 28 Spring St\, Belfast Maine. \nThis workshop is ideal for anyone in a fundraising role who has not yet had a one-on-one FDO tutorial with UMC staff. Certified Expert FDO Trainer Kelly Carey will offer an interactive\, hands-on workshop to introduce the grant prospecting tools available through UMC’s partnership with Candid’s Foundation Center Online. \nThere are over 140\,000 charitable foundations in the United States\, and 80% of them don’t have a website. Finding funders who are the right fit may seem impossible\, especially to small organizations who rely on volunteers. Foundation Directory Online grantseekers’ database offers incredible tools to make this process approachable. FDO offers up-to-date insight on grantmakers working in every part of the country\, in every field and interest. In-depth funder profiles and details on past giving can help nonprofits craft a strong case for the foundations most likely to give to their cause. \nIn 2019\, more than 50 nonprofit representatives used FDO at UMC to seek funding. 100% of surveyed respondents say they identified strong new prospects\, 60% said they will change how they ask current or lapsed funders based on their learning\, and 80% have recommended this resource to others. \nThis workshop is free but enrollment is limited. Registration is required. Call 207-236-2299 with additional questions. Attendees will access the database on UMC’s network with their own laptop or tablet\, so please bring a fully charged device adequate for about 90 minutes of online work. Snacks will be provided. \n***CANCELLATION/NO SHOW POLICY \nPlease note that while this event is free\, the experience is valuable and wait-lists are long. SUMMARY:Learn With UMC: Board Boot Camp
DESCRIPTION:Do you ever worry about whether the board you’re on is covering all of its bases – or whether there’s some outstanding risk or liability that you’ve overlooked? This workshop will provide participants with a working understanding of the legal\, fiduciary and governance obligations of nonprofit boards of directors. Attendees will gain clarity regarding the “must do” and “should do” tasks that every board faces and acquire strategies for engaging current and potential new board members in sharing the workload. Everyone will leave with an action plan for increasing the effectiveness of their board and heightened confidence regarding nonprofit board governance in an increasingly complex environment. \nThis session is for you if you are new to nonprofit governance\, if you wonder whether your board is covering all its bases\, or if your organization has grown beyond its grassroots origins but the board has not. \nThis program is intended for current board members\, including new board members with little to no experience serving on boards as well as more experienced board members who want a refresher.  Executive directors are welcome to attend with other board members\, and it is strongly suggested that teams of 2-3 from the same organization attend together for maximum benefit. \nFill out my LGL form! \nAbout the Presenter:\nPresenter Mary Aselton Budd joined Starboard Leadership Consulting after seven years at the helm of Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor. As board president and then executive director\, she developed and implemented an ambitious strategic plan that resulted in financial stabilization\, programmatic expansion\, audience development\, and many capital improvements. Mary first forayed behind the scenes in the performing arts as co-producer of Black Rock\, a feature film shot in Downeast Maine and sold at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. \nAttendance at this event is free of charge\, but pre-registration is required and space is limited to 35 participants. Register at unitedmidcoastcharities.org/events or call UMC at 236-2299 for more information. The Learn With UMC series has been generously funded by Barney and Edward Lane and through business sponsorships. Board Boot Camp is put on in partnership with Maine Association of Nonprofits and is sponsored in part by Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. UMC’s year-long media sponsor is Courier Publications.

DESCRIPTION:THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL – Please check out the August workshop or call 236-2299 for other options \nThe July offering in UMC’s free educational series\, Learn with UMC: Grantseeking with Foundation Directory Online\, will be offered at 9 a.m. on July 12 at 87 Elm St\, Camden. Certified Expert Trainer Kelly Carey will offer an interactive\, hands-on workshop to introduce local nonprofits to the grant prospecting tools available through UMC’s partnership with Foundation Center Online. \nThere are over 140\,000 charitable foundations in the United States\, with a huge range of giving interests. Finding funders that are the right fit and making a strong approach can seem impossible\, especially to volunteer-driven organizations. The Foundation Directory Online grantseeker’s database offers incredible tools to make this process achievable. \nFoundation Directory Online offers up-to-date insight on grantmakers working in every part of the country\, in every field and interest. In-depth funder profiles and details on past giving can help nonprofits craft a strong approach to the foundations most likely to give to their cause. 100% of those who have attended an FDO tutorial at UMC say that they identified prospective new funders\, and 65% say they learned something new about a funder who is already donating to their program. Come learn how to use this database\, which United Midcoast Charities offers free of charge 5 days a week. \nThe workshop is free but enrollment is limited. This workshop is generously sponsored by First National Bank. \nPre-register or call 236-2299 with additional questions. Attendees will access the database with their own laptop or tablet\, so please bring a fully charged device adequate for about 90 minutes of online work. Coffee and morning snacks will be provided. \nAbout the presenter: \nKelly Carey is administrative coordinator at United Midcoast Charities as well the as primary coach of the Foundation Directory Online database at UMC. She loves the magic moment when a grant seeker realizes that there is LOTS of grant funding available for their work. \nTHIS WORKSHOP IS FULL – Please check out the August workshop or call 236-2299 for other options \n

SUMMARY:Learn With UMC: Benefits Options for Nonprofits
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP FOR THIS WORKSHOP \nThe June offering in our free educational series\, Learn with UMC: Benefits Options for Nonprofits\, will be held at the Picker Room of the Camden Library at 3 p.m. on June 6.  This two-hour workshop will discuss options for a variety of nonprofit employee benefits packages. \nNonprofit boards sometimes consider employee benefits an unnecessary expense and avoid including them in their budget. However\, Maine Association of Nonprofit’s 2018 nonprofit compensation report indicates that Maine’s nonprofit wages are stagnant despite a cross-sector labor shortage. Nonprofit employees may be forced to look to other sectors to keep up with the rising cost of living.  A strong benefits package can help recruit and retain the top-quality staff that nonprofits rely on to accomplish their mission. \nLearn with UMC: Benefits Options for Nonprofits will offer the real-life experiences of a local nonprofit’s decision to offer employees benefits. Meg Rasmussen\, executive director of Georges River Land Trust\, will talk about how benefits have affected the trust’s impact as well as the bottom line. Sheila Lowe of Aflac Insurance and Sherree Craig and Abe Dugal of Allen Insurance & Financial will discuss flexible\, affordable options often requested by nonprofits. Dr. Brian Pierce of Megunticook Family Mediine will discuss how the new model of Direct Primary Care can work for employers of various sizes.  UMC staff will share research on which benefits are most desirable to employees. Attendees will learn how to improve their recruitment and retention efforts in a financially sustainable way and leave with the tools to get started. \nThis workshop is free of charge but pre-registration is required. Register here or call UMC at 236-2299 for more information. \nThis workshop is sponsored by Heal Accounting. \nSIGN UP FOR THIS WORKSHOP

SUMMARY:Learn With UMC: Track Your Impact
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP FOR THIS WORKSHOP \nPresenters from USM’s Data Innovation Project will offer a three-hour workshop\, Track Your Impact\, to help nonprofits use data to achieve their intended impact. \nFunders of all kinds increasingly expect nonprofits to demonstrate their impact through program data. As nonprofits are expected to take on more work previously funded by the public sector and competition for charitable dollars increases\, effective data can give crucial strength to a nonprofit’s fundraising efforts. Effective use of data can improve every aspect of nonprofit impact\, from guiding strategic direction and program development to dramatically improving fundability. \nLearn with UMC: Track Your Impact will guide participants from Knox and Waldo county nonprofit organizations through the purpose and processes of developing a performance measurement approach. Attendees will define what they want to measure\, set priorities\, craft quality measurement objectives\, and learn how to foster a data-informed culture in their organizations. Attendees will leave with a firm foundation in how to build a performance measurement plan\, a clear next step\, and a workbook to support them going forward. \nThere is no cost to participate\, but space is limited so registration is required. Please register here. \nAbout the presenters: \nThe Data Innovation Project was founded with support from the Maine Economic Improvement Fund and is housed within the Cutler Institute for Health and Social Policy at the Muskie School of Public Service\, University of Southern Maine. The Data Innovation Project improves Maine’s capacity for data-informed decision making by providing access to affordable information and instruction\, skilled technical assistance\, and open access to a growing body of resources. \nSIGN UP FOR THIS WORKSHOP
