When illness, injury, or aging makes everyday life more challenging, having the right equipment can help people stay safe, comfortable, and independent at home. Through its Medical Equipment Lending Library, United Midcoast Charities grantee partner CADNA (Camden Area District Nursing Association) provides free access to durable medical equipment and personal care items for community members who need them.

The library offers wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, and other equipment that can support recovery, help manage chronic illness, and allow older adults to age in place with dignity. Equipment is available for as long as it is needed, removing a financial burden for individuals and families during difficult times.

What makes the program special is its community-powered approach. Donated equipment is cleaned, maintained, and shared with neighbors in need. When borrowers are finished using an item, they are encouraged to return it so it can help someone else.

“Our Lending Library is truly community supporting community,” said Lisa Payson, CADNA’s Office Administrator. “There’s no insurance to navigate, no government program involved, and no cost to borrow the equipment. Some of the most meaningful moments are when a family facing a difficult situation learns we have exactly what they need and can provide it immediately. The relief on their faces says everything.”

There is no charge to borrow equipment, though donations are welcome to help sustain the program. Community members can also donate gently used medical equipment and unopened supplies. Items that cannot be used locally are sent to Partners for World Health, where they are distributed to underserved communities around the world.

CADNA’s lending library is one of only a handful of programs like it serving Knox and Waldo counties. Residents of Isleboro can access a similar service through The Beacon Project’s medical equipment lending library. For information, contact:
