New Community Collaborative Offers Unique Way To Support Knox County Neighbors

Community Investors of Knox County launches this month

ROCKLAND, Maine —There’s a new way for Knox County residents to help low-income individuals and families move out of poverty. Community Investors of Knox County is a community collaborative compromised of a group of highly established non-profit organizations in Knox County. Its goal is to create ways to help people directly.

Sometimes changing the future of a low-income person is just a simple solution away, such as a car repair or a down payment to secure an apartment. Community Investors of Knox County’s case managers vet needs through an extensive network of local resources to make sure the need cannot be funded in any other way.

We are holding open information sessions to share updates to our grant application and answer any questions about our new focus areas or our 2018 Grant process. United Midcoast Charities announced that it has recently been named a “2017 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews of charities and nonprofits.

United Midcoast Charities (UMC) provides grants to more than 50 nonprofit organizations Knox and Waldo counties that help residents in need with essential services.

We are proud of our accomplishments this year, including the addition of a full-time Executive Director, $500,000 in grants to our local community and the wrap up of a new strategic plan outlining new funding and guidance initiatives to support our grantees.”

Rockland and Camden Shops Support UMC with Days of Giving

The holiday spirit is thriving in Rockland and the Camden area, where businesses in each town have set aside a Saturday in December to contribute to United Midcoast Charities (UMC) in support of the work of local nonprofit organizations.

Rockland will host a Day of Giving on December 2, and the Camden area will follow suit on December 9. Participating shops have committed to generously donate a portion of their sales to UMC, and all proceeds will be applied toward UMC’s grants – which help food pantries, health clinics, nursing services, homeless shelters and other providers of vital services in Knox and Waldo counties. The Day of Giving events are made possible through sponsorship from Horch Roofing with media sponsored by Courier Publications.

“We are deeply grateful to the business owners participating in the Days of Giving and to the people who make a point of shopping in support of UMC,” said UMC President John Viehman. “This collective effort illustrates our strong belief that working together makes us a stronger community.”

United Midcoast Charities Awards $500,000 in Grants to Nonprofits

Recipients gather in Belfast for networking breakfast

United Midcoast Charities (UMC) marked the awarding of $500,000 of grants this year to more than 50 nonprofit organizations in Knox and Waldo counties with a networking breakfast at the Belfast Boathouse on September 29. The Breakfast for Champions was generously sponsored by Allen Insurance and Financial and Bangor Savings Bank.

Representatives of organizations receiving grant funding enjoyed meeting each other and hearing Pecha Kucha presentations about the work of Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County, MCH Meals on Wheels and Midcoast Habitat for Humanity. The celebratory event included a tribute to UMC’s outgoing grants committee chairman, Peter Horch.

New Executive Director

Megan L. Williams of Rockland will join United Mid-Coast Charities as the organization’s first-ever executive director.

“Megan is the right person at just the right time for us,” said John Viehman, president of UMCC’s Board of Directors. “She has a passion for social services, is a great collaborator, a natural leader. She’ll be key to sustaining our 76-year legacy of support for essential service providers here in Midcoast Maine.
